On The Warpath Volume 16: Obligatory Gators And Canes Coaching Post

Children, let’s talk about a college football related pet peeve of mine: I hate talking about rivals on an FSU related website. I hate talking about the Florida Gators or the Miami Hurricanes unless the Noles are playing them. Why? Because I don’t feel like wasting my energy thinking about either of them. My fanaticism lies with the Noles, not with hatred of our rivals.

I have better things to do with my time other than worry about Miami or Florida like:

  • Anything

Since everyone else has weighed in on the topic though, I felt like there was some much needed perspective on the reality of the Muschamp / Golden hirings.  Regarding Will Muschamp… he’s a Gator and now the enemy. Regarding Al Golden… he’s a Cane and now the enemy. Pretty simple, no?  To put it another way, the reason neither hiring moves my emotions greatly is because they have NOTHING TO DO WITH JIMBO FISHER AND THE NOLES. Sure, it can affect recruiting. But a lot of kids are Gators, a lot are Noles and others are Canes. I’ve always thought that deep down, many of the players know in their gut where they are going and many times aren’t swayed no matter what anybody says. Some of us are just born to be Gators, Canes or Noles.

On top of that Noles need to remember that these situations are fluid. Will Muschamp might fall flat on his face at Florida. He might win a bunch of national titles. Who knows? I mean, he has to play in the BIG BAG SEC CONFERENCE NOW RIGHT? NOM NOM THE ESSS EEEE CEEEE WILL EAT YOU ALIVE, RIGHT? Plus, Urban Meyer is still around. WTF is that about? Al Golden might suddenly get more resources in Miami or he might fall into program mediocrity that started before him. Is he best coach available? No. Was he affordable and a pretty good hire? Yeah. A lot of his success or lack of success is based on forces outside of his coaching. There’s never 100% certainty about the future. At the end of the day, my only concern is whether or not Jimbo Fisher is doing everything he can to make the Noles winners. Jimbo is doing that and the hirings in the Gainesville or Coral Gables won’t change that.

Pardon me if I don’t care about Will Muschamp or Al Golden. Pardon me if I don’t care what the Gators or Canes do on a daily basis. I have better things to do than worry about the one and a half other major programs in the state and whether or not FSU gets a list of EXCUSES for a lack of success if either of those rivals succeeds in the future.  Florida who? Miami what? Who cares? Up next are the South Carolina Gamecocks with good old Steve-O at the helm. Let’s hear more about that and whether or not Jimbo Fisher has some more icing for the 2010 Cake.

Especially right now, I don’t really care. Our recruiting class is shaping up to be perhaps best in the country. And I want to see the Ol’ Ball Coach turn beet-red, throw his stupid little visor down, and squeal one more time.

I’m less and less bothered by Muschamp the more I think about it, because, really, with all that he had at his disposal at Texas — complete capture of one of the three best recruiting states, comically enormous resources, and of course being a disciple of His Holiness Nick Saban — his production strikes me as underwhelming.

As for Golden — really? The guy who went 2-6,000 or something vs winning teams in a conference where he apparently had more resources and talent than everybody (and never finished higher than 3rd)? Even if Miami were willing to pony up for facilities that don’t look like they were borrowed from a Swat Valley grade school, I’d have trouble being bothered by this guy.

hey bill, while i do agree that uf and miami don’t deserve to be talked about i find it as just a college football fan in general, it’s nice to know about your rivals. not only that but all of your in-conference foes as well. your right though, now is the time for the message boards to be lighting up with south carolina talk. can’t wait for the bowl game. i would love to take it to spurrier one more time. too bad you wont be at the game. as for the 7-5 gators and canes, ill start to worry about them come signing day in feb. and then more in the spring. until then we have the bowl game, hoops and even fsu baseball coming soon. go noles.
