What’s With The Ponder / Tebow Obsession?

20

Posted by NoleCC

Maybe I’m a little stupid or something, but I just don’t understand why I now have to read about how much better Christian Ponder is than Tim Tebow, like EVERYWHERE. Seriously, I hear enough about Timmy from ESPN, CBS, every Gator on the planet. Now I’m reading direct comparisons on all plenty of Seminole websites.

ChantRant – Something about circumcisions

Tomahawk Nation is promising even more stats later today.

Andrew Carter – For the sake of comparision

Warchant.com even has a “premium” blog about whether Ponder is the best QB in Florida, which is funny considering every other website out there just gave you the comparisons for free.

Seminole fans’ obsession with proving their rivals wrong is amusing to me. It like the old adage about the Miami game, “Canes expect to win the game, Noles hope to win it.” Gator fans are arrogant? Gator fans are watching their teams win a whole lot, it’s not arrogance then it’s confidence. In reality for Noles, it’s an inferiority complex that I’ve witnessed since I attended my first game at FSU in 1997. I appreciate a broader view, like why is Ponder being shut out of awards nominations this season (because the Noles aren’t winning games)? But from a pure Gator vs. Seminole thing, what difference does it make?

Just for the stupidity of it all let’s make some other comparisions:

  • Gators #1  right now. Noles not ranked.
  • Gators undefeated. Noles 3-4
  • Gator fans could give a crap what Ponder does. Seminole fans are obsessed with hating  Tebow or proving why he sucks.

Seriously, why would I care what the man from Gainesville is doing in comparison to Christian Ponder? Throw some other QBs into the discussion and top if off with NFL Draft projections, then fine MAYBE I’m interested. It obvious Christian Ponder is having a great year, it’s also obvious that Tim Tebow is having a down year. You could also say that for a ton of Division I QBs. As for Ponder vs. Tebow, it doesn’t matter until November 28, 2009 when they play each other. Then, and only then, do I care about a direct comparison.

“What’s With The Ponder / Tebow Obsession?”

What’s with the proving you’re a better fan than others obsession?

    • NoleCCNo Gravatar says:

Interesting take Matthew, but I don’t believe I said I was better than other FSU fans. I just said I don’t get it. I hear enough about Tebow every day without FSU fans getting in on the act.

It’s the same old crap. Bowden himself did it earlier this year with the Ward / Tebow comparsion. I really don’t care about what the Gators are doing on a week-in / week-out basis.

You certainly didn’t come out and say it, but it is in the tone; and I have seen your take on a number of other things that had a similar tone.

All I’m saying is why worry about what others are doing? If you don’t like the comparisons, don’t read them it is simple.

    • NoleCCNo Gravatar says:

Perhaps you are implying a tone in a written article to suit the needs of your comments?

And why wouldn’t I spout my opinion on a blog? It’s what everyone else does. My opinion is that I don’t get why most Seminole websites are comparing Ponder to Tim Tebow. What difference does it make? I understand the stuff about the Davey O’Brien snub, but why not compare Ponder to Clausen, McCoy, etc. if we’re talking Tebow too?

      • MatthewNo Gravatar says:

It is logical. Tebow, by virtue of his success, has become a measuring stick by which others are compared. Add in the fact that he plays in the same state, and for a rival and there are plenty of reasons why a comparison to Tebow is more popular than one to Clausen or McCoy.

        • NoleCCNo Gravatar says:

Measuring stick of victories, but not the QB position.

I’d argue that Tebow’s success has less to do with him, and more to do with the guys around him that never get mentioned. Tebow has never been considered NFL material at QB, McCoy, Clausen and many others are, including Ponder. To me those comparisons make more sense.

I agree that the constant comparisons to Tebow are completely useless. The only thing that matters to me are wins and losses. Who cares about the Davey O’Brien or the Heisman when your team is 3-4? Who cares about a statistical comparison when Tebow has won 2 National Championships and will probably win a 3rd. That makes him the man. There is no need to compare TT with CP7. I love CP7, but in the only category that matters he is trailing mightily.

NoleCC, glad to hear you are recovering.
    Go Noles!

    • MatthewNo Gravatar says:

But that is a logical fallacy that the mainstream media pounds their chest about. Ponder does not trail Tebow in wins, FSU trails UF in wins. That has nothing to do with the way Ponder is playing; he isn’t the reason FSU is 3-4.

Some fans are just very proud of how well Ponder is playing, and are sick of the lovefest for Tebow so they are showing that our guy is playing better.

      • NoleCCNo Gravatar says:

Matthew, I’m hugely proud of CP7 too, don’t get me wrong. But, that’s life I suppose. Being a superstar on a crap team isn’t going to get exposure for a player.

That might end up helping FSU, because the NFL might not take notice. If they’d do, I think Ponder would be smart to leave after this season, especially if Fisher doesn’t have full control of the program next season.

Wait, how are you a Mets and Noles fan and NOT have an inferiority complex? There are so many similarities. Both live in the shadow of an Evil Empire. This argument is the same as saying Johan Santana is better than CC Sabathia.

There is also the need to hang your hat on something. Note to Noles fans, however, basketball season starts soon. FSU has won 3 of the last 4 in men’s hoops vs UF.

    • NoleCCNo Gravatar says:

Funny you bring up the Mets Jordi, the Evil Empire doesn’t bother me unless they are playing head to head. I haven’t had the experiences with the arrogant Yankee fans as badly as some. I agree there are similarities for sure.

Speaking of that… Phillies or Yankees? I’m rooting for the Phillies to lose, I’ll leave it at that.

Just want to point out, Matthew not = MattDNole.

    He’s right though. =P

  6. JNole says:

Hey Nole way to not be a nole and take Tebow side on the argument. This is the most ridiculous post I have ever seen. Your tone makes it feel like you want the gators and tebow to be better than us. We are excited about one thing regarding FSU football( we all know its been awhile since we had something to brag about) so take it for what its worth and enjoy braging about the fact we have the best playing QB in the state or even the country.

    • NoleCCNo Gravatar says:

      JNole,

I’m not taking the Tebow side of the argument. I’m pointing out how fruitless it is to compare Ponder to ONE player. Ponder is quite possibly the best in the country right now, and it sucks that he’s not getting recognition. But, if he is going to get recognition, then the other prize winners need to be included in the argument, not just Tim Tebow.

I hate the Gators, to the point that I don’t want to hear about them. The fact that I have to read about them even when talking about the Noles is what bugs me.

So you think that NoleCC is not a Nole because of his tone? Tone is something you hear not something you interpret from a writing. Your own biases are reflected in your interpretation. NoleCC is Scalpem and he’s given many of us a place to report our observations of football, softball, basketball, baseball etc. at FSU whether it be the good, the bad, or the ugly! NoleCC has shouted, stood, applauded, bragged etc. for Seminoles and Seminole fans of all talents on the field and off. Scalpem is the place where people can disagree because we are all entitled to our opinions, including you. Just don’t confuse opinions with tones. I agree with NoleCC who simply says that Christian Ponder needs to play against TT this season and have a great performance to prove if he indeed is a greater quarterback than TT this year. You can substitute Clausen or McCoy for TT. If FSU and Ponder had the opportunity to play Texas or ND this year then again we might be able to compare stats according to the rules set up outside of Tallahassee and the State of Florida. I luv Christian Ponder and want the students to chant his name this weekend as a reward for his excellent playing and leadership. The team has to win more for Christian to be recognized nationally. If you watched game day last weekend, then you should be aware that our team has become a running joke for the game day crew! I’m sure these national sportscasters are not alone. The team has to earn more respect by winning games!

  1. [...] Pulse of the ACC. Hell, the most excited I’ve been about N.C. State this week was when Adrian Wilson gave a shout out to Philip Rivers during an interview on the Jim Rome show. That’s just depressing. The locals are sacrificing their prize pigs to Saint Dabo who better stuff himself fat on ham and bacon while he can because that unexpected loss is right around the corner. Dane and Winfield score a Pee-wee Herman in an adult theater on the CGB Giddy Scale. Brian and Jeff are adrift in a motionless ocean of what happened and are trying to figure out how to tell their wives they won’t at home in time for Foxtrot lessons. And, finally, Softball Face wants ‘Noles to forget the Ponder/Tebow comparisons. [...]
