FSU Softball And Baseball Break Out The Brooms
Posted by NoleCC
FSU Seminole Baseball and FSU Seminole Softball laid waste to the N.C. State Wolfpack over the weekend. Both teams broke out the brooms and swept The Pack.
For the Baseball Team:
Game 1 – Noles score late for a 9-3 win.
Game 2 – Noles Tapley Hits a Granny and puts the Noles over 4-2.
Game 3 – The Noles routed the Wolfpack 13-2.
For the Softball Team:
The Noles pulled out all three games over the weekend, 10-1, 1-0, 1-0. FSU’s bats woke up for Game 1, but then cooled off yet again the rest of the weekend. Thankfully, the pitching staff posted two shutouts (Gober in Game 2 on Saturday, and a combined attack on Sunday). The Noles kept errors to a minimum though, and wins are wins, 10-1 or 1-0.
Offense:
Ashley Stager (.331 BA) batted in 5 Seminoles on Friday in Game 1, going 2 for 3 with a run scored and 5 RBI. Five walks helped bury the Wolfpack, and FSU left only 3 on base for Game 1. Ten runs gets the job done easily. Games 2 and 3 were more like what we’ve seen recently, with the bats struggling and 12 runners left on base combined over those two games. Other than that, there’s just not a lot to say about the box score from the weekend.
Defense:
There were only 2 errors committed over the weekend, and again none of them were up the middle. Michelle Snyder picked up number 9 on the season, and Terese Gober picked up her 1st. Neither error proved costly for the Noles, and overall the defense remains solid. The Seminoles are fielding .971 as a team this season, much improved over last year’s .957 effort.
Pitching:
What can I say? Terese Gober and Sarah Hamilton continue to lead the Noles to wins. Gober improved her overall record to 22-8, 11 CG, with an opponent BA of .181. Not too shabby, eh? Sarah Hamilton moved her overall record to 13-5, 11 CG, with an opponent BA of .176. Oh yeah and she has both saves for the Noles this season. Even Lauren Varsalona, who has struggled this year, pitched a scoreless inning against N.C. State. Combined Gober and Hamilton have struck out 383 batters this season.

Positives-Our pitching continues to be stellar and the defense is holding strong.
Negatives-We lead the ACC in strikeouts.
Also and bash me if you must, I have come to the conclusion that we will have a new second basewoman come next season. Could be wrong.
Ed,
Definitely not going to bash you on that one, but what’s funny about McConn is that there are plenty of times that it looks like (to me) that she’s about to turn the corner at the plate. I know .205 is bad, but she’s leading all infielders (minus Rafter) in fielding %. The problem isn’t just McConn, because I’ll happily take a great fielder with sub par batting stats, especially up the middle. The problem, imho, is that we have too many players that fall into the category.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Stager is the only returnee starter in the infield next season.
Not an out there call at all Nancy…
Snyder – Senior, graduated.
Stager – Definite at short thanks to that bat.
McConn – I’d love to see her bat improve a bit, but her fielding is solid.
Joseph – .187 at the plate, defense was rough at the beginning of the year but settled in as she played more 1B.
Rafter – Senior, graduated.
So Ahrberg should healthy behind the plate, Stager at short, I’m going to guess that McConn at the very least starts the year starting at 2B. I’d love to see a power bat playing 1B for the Noles, and 3B will need a replacement, but do we go with a freshman there, or maybe someone like Borden?
We only have 3 news recruits next year, I think.
For the fall signing period they had Bullock (pitcher) and Brown (utility) but I believe they have 4 or 5 signees in the spring period. I will check it out and post details when confirmed.
Thanks Nancy.
My contact confirmed an additional 4 committed for a total of 6 recruits for next season but I’m unsure of their positions. A number of “walk-ons” are also expected at the fall tryouts.
Thanks for the scoop Nancy!
Here is the list of commits for the 2010 class from UCS.
Florida State: Eliza Crawford, Ashlyn Masters, Maddie O’Brien, Kelly Hensley, Hannah Rogers, Evelyn Morgado
Thanks to the power of the internet as fair as I can tell the only one that is now heading elsewhere is Crawford(UF, yuck), the rest will be here for the 2011 season. Now as fair as the 2009 class the ones we know of are Bullock, Brown and the recent addition of Stephenie Drake. So that leaves the 3 others you mentioned Nancy that we have yet to get info on, plus the walk-ons. BTW I have read good stuff on recent 2010 commit Rogers, sounds like a great pitching prospect.
Speaking of UF swiping a former commit from us, didnt we not too long ago have the pick of the litter in the state of Florida? UF is getting girls now who are 14! A little young imho.
I’m definitely ‘out to lunch’ on some of the recruits that you mention above, as I thought they were “signed” and not verbally commits so some of the recruits I thought were coming in September are actually 2010’s and not yet signed. As we all know, until they are signed “verbal” really means nothing. One other player that I did have on my note pad is Celeste Gomez but again I’m not sure if she is a 2009 or 2010.
Also, the info I have on Morgado is that she’s a SS/2B – I don’t have anything on her as a catcher. The majority of the recruits are middle infielders with a utility, pitcher and OF for the mix. However, I thought there was also a catcher coming in 2009. Ed, let me know if you find out any more info on this. I doubt there will be any press on the 2010 players though, unless it’s from their own teams, themselves or their parents reporting. Also, doubt any walk-ons will be featured in the press until they tryout and make the team. Most players/parents like to toot their own horns if they are signed or verballed and not likely as a walk-on.
I probably have as much info as you Nancy. Its hard to dig up info in the softball recruiting world unless you are lucky enough to have a source. After checking Gomez is a junior now and is part of that 2010 class, making it a total of 6, remember Crawford is no longer committed. Oddly enough, Gomez did not play softball this season to focus on weight lifting, power hitter maybe? I will post info as I stumble upon it on here in the weekly softball updates.
The 2009 catcher was the girl from the cal cruisers who decided to change her mind after Graf retired and is now going to Washington.
We have a girl that is comming in next year from Washington, she is a catcher her name is Bryer (a 09) and also a nother girl that is a catcher (10) is comming and there is 2 (09) short stops comming Brown and Hensley
Bryer? Any more info on her?
Bryer is a big kid. Very good arm and power in the bat. Masters is from Ga. plays 2nd. and sick power at the plate.Gomez is so strong and also strong arm.Have seen all 3 play and they will bring alot to the team.
Thanks anon.
Stephanie Drake (09 recruit) has carried her team to the state tournament in Kansas. She is still batting over 600 for the year and has over 45 stolen bases so far. She currently plays SS for her high school team and was also named Vype magazine player of the year. They say she has a quick glove with an awesome arm. She gets on base every time she is up. Fast and heads up around the bases. I look forward to seeing her play for us next year. Maybe she will fill Snyders shoes at 3rd. It will be nice to see more speed on the team.
I think I read that FSU signed her intending to move her to 3rd, so basically I think the Coaches agree with you Anon, and 3rd will more than likely be Drakes to lose.
I sure didn’t mean to leave anyone out. I have heard the same things about Drake. Also watched Rogers pitch last year and really liked her.One of her close friends is Morgado and heard that she might play 3rd also. I think the 10 class we be one of the best that has come thur in many many years. Bullock (09) is with out a doubt the fastest kid I have ever seen she runs like a cheeta.
Wow, not only is Bullock a good pitcher and hitter, but can run, good to hear. What club does Bryer play for out west, I am trying to find info on her?
Bryer (Washington Lady Hawks) Miller Bullock Can she run? She is super fast!!!
Morgado,Rogers,Gomez(Gold Coast Hurricanes)
Masters(Atlanta Vipers)Vallery
Bullock( Georgia Elite)
Thanks for keeping us up to date Anon!
Thanks a ton Anon, will we be able to keep Masters with the success of UGA and GT this year? Is she solid with us?
Have not talked to Vallery in a couple of months, but last time I spoke with him he said she could have went anywhere. The Deciding factor was the new staff. With that said I think she is a lock.Got a call in to him, so I Should know somthing later. I heard Coach Navas ( NC State) Say that Gomez had the quickest pop time of all (2010) catchers. Should be fun to watch.
Ed, Bryer had a skills video on their teams website at one time.
Yes, thanks a lot, I watched the video, looks good. Funny, I was looking everywhere online for info on a catcher in Washington state named Bryer, not realizing that was her first name, lol, and it was spelled Briar. No wonder I had such difficulty. I hope this ‘10 class stays intact, like you said it would be a great class.
