Dr. Saturday: Don’t Trust Your Eyes

10

After basically being berated in the last post’s comments by an anonymous posted about my lack of travel to the bowl game and equating that to not being a true FSU fan, I took a look at my RSS Reader and saw that Dr. Saturday over at Yahoo! wasn’t all that impressed with the 42-13 win over Wisconsin. My after game thoughts aren’t quite as cynical as his, but I have to admit that I’m not totally sold yet.

Why? Because outside of Penn State I haven’t respected the Big 10 all season. They’re slow, boring and awful.  Even more hilarious is that Wisconsin fans are claiming that FSU is the 4th best team they’ve faced this season, behind Penn State, Ohio State and Iowa. Should I piss myself laughing at that last choice? And the Buckeyes aren’t anything to write home about either.

Look, even Andrew Carter pointed out that overall, the offense wasn’t that great, and that the final score could have been a lot different had Graham Gano not had a great night, and a couple of fumbles not gone FSU’s way. Wisconsin ran for 200 yards on that Mickey Andrew’s defense. So, other than the turnovers, it was a lot of what we’ve seen all season.

I’m happy that FSU won of course, whether it’s by 1 or by 70.  But, I’ll admit that the first half was a snore, aside from Graham Gano’s Puntstravaganza (Chili donated that word via Mobile IM last night). And the second half was fun to watch because everything went FSU’s way. On top of that, my favorite QB, Drew Weatherford got to see some playing time before riding off into the sunset.  All in all it was a good way to end a 2008 season that basically met my expecations. It was a year of “something to build on” and the Noles can build on a Champs Sports Bowl victory heading into 2009.

10 Wins is a must.

10 wins is a must? How about make a bowl game is a must? This defense has the potential to give up 350+ points.

I hate to be the negative Nancy, Scalpem, but this team should take a step back next year. More road games and a poorly coached and young defense will do that.

    Allow me to clarify.

Next year needs to be “Hold serve.” 9-4 against next year’s schedule with out defense will be phenomenal.

    TN,

I think next year if the Noles “hold serve” there will be even more outrage. I’ve always heard about how “talented” FSU remains, even though they are consistently a 4-5 loss team. I just don’t see how not getting back to 10 wins is acceptable, with many of the offensive starters returning. The Big XII proved if you can score enough you can win a lot of games.

And the Big Ten proved that bad defenses and questionable offenses can lead to dismal seasons. I’m being cynical of course. My Wolverines can only improve next year right?

I think the real problem the Noles face is that there is a LOT of parity in the ACC right now. If Ponder continues to improve and makes better decisions and throws the ball before his receiver is WIDE open, the offense should be better. The defense may look terrible at times, but they always seem to make the big play when they need to.

The most important thing, and Bobby is right about this, but the Noles need to focus on catching back up to the Gators.

    #3…

we could lose 9 defensive starters. 9 of 11.

10 wins next year is not a must– it’s a pipe dream. We’ll barely break .500, again, and that due to our improving offense. Our defense will be understaffed and out-schemed.

Don’t misunderstand me guys… I don’t actually believe FSU will get 10 wins… but I do think it’s a must for the current administration. We shall see!

  8. RandyNo Gravatar says:

I’m sure Bobby praying to God at half time will bring us 10 wins. RIght?

  9. gatorhippy says:

Losing nine of eleven starters on defense is not a good thing…

Just ask the Gators how that worked out for them last season…

    8-4 if you need a hint…

And that’s with Tim Tebow and his laser eyes and Green Lantern ring…

If Drew Weatherford is your favorite quarterback then you must LOOOVE mediocrity. It’ll be a great year for you next year but a bad one for every single other FSU fan out there.
