Not To Pick On Tomahawk Nation Again, But…
Posted by NoleCC
Holy crap… the latest post over there is amusing to say the least.
I encourage FSU fans to not renew their season tickets or make any booster contributions until these things happen:
First of all, this isn’t going to prove anything, because it’s not going to happen. The only part of me that likes the idea is the part of me that wants to move to the shady side of the stadium. And it may be true that there will be less season ticket holders next year because of the economy and the generally crappy home schedule.
Anyway on to the two (as BFT would say) Bumfuzzling reasons:
The defensive staff is let go and Jimbo Fisher is allowed to hand pick the new defensive staff; and
The administration puts Bowden on notice that 2009 is his last year to fleece the state of Florida of over 2 million dollars. They need to tell him in no uncertain terms that he will not be chasing 400 wins here. Â Any notion that he will coach in 2010 and we will be forced to pay Jimbo his penalty/bonus is absurd. Â This team is desperately crying out for leadership and receiving none. Â Bobby will never again beat the Gators. Â Those in power should give him 2 options: 1) Bow out gracefully after your exciting win in the Champs Sports Bowl, or 2) Limp out 2009 with the hope that Paterno doesn’t make it to 2009, get the all-time wins record, and get destroyed by the Gators in the swamp to end his career. Â There must not be any option for him to return in 2010.
First of all, the jury for Jimbo is still out. FSU had craptastic first halves all year, shouldn’t an OC have a good gameplan going into the game and not always be making adjustments at halftime? What makes anyone think that his hand picking the defense would be any better. Frankly, I’d hope he picks a DC that then picks the guys HE wants for the staff. You know, since Jimbo’s an offense kind of guy.
Second of all, the Administration is going to do jack squat, so quit whining about it. It’s Bobby Bowden Field at Doak Campbell Stadium. There’s a big ugly statue of Bowden outside of it, and an even uglier Stained Glass window of Bowden overlooking the field. Is 2 million dollars unreasonable? Maybe, but that depends on what you think of all the money Bowden brought in to FSU after resurrecting the program. Yadda yadda, we agree to disagree here, only because I won’t get angry about a guy staying when everyone else annoited him a saint years ago.
But perhaps the most outrageous of the comments is this:
In a strange way, FSU fans should hope that the NCAA takes away wins from the 2007 season as an additional sanction from the cheating scandal. Â Anything that puts distance between Paterno and Bowden is good for the Florida State Program. Â Some root for Bowden at the expense of the program, but unless Paterno doesn’t make it through hip surgery, Nole fans (or Bobby fans, as some root for him and not FSU) will never again hear him announced over the PA system as “the winningiest coach in college football history.”
Seriously? I’m almost speechless about a Seminole “fan” wishing infractions on his school, under the guise of it being for the “sake” of FSU football. Of course, I know at least one of the TN writers was at the Iron Bowl instead of FSU / Florida, chalk it up to the writer going to Bama at this point. Seriously, additional sanctions? Coming from the website that claims we should expect some of the players to get arrested each year?
Give me a break, you guys are better than this crap.

To their defense you guys honestly should have some guys arrested every year if I’m going to get the most out of my investment in a box of CRIMINOLES t-shirts back in 99.
lol… this coming from a WHAM fan.
I called for them to make it clear because he obviously did not get the hints of the statues (I think they are cool) and the stained glass window.
I’m not wishing sanctions on my school. I would, however, rather have Bobby lose wins than our program lose scholarships. Then again, I root for FSU first, Bowden 2nd.
Thanks for questioning the fandom, again.
I’ll continue to point out stuff like that, when it doesn’t make any sense to me. What’s the point of it? There’s a lot of old money happy to keep Saint Bobby around.
Our rubber stamp president and AD will do nothing, and we’ll be mired in Bobby’s self-inflicted mediocrity, losing to our biggest rival, UNTIL the admin feels the heat of empty coffers.
Why? Because revenues are the metric by which their own job performance is evaluated. Until TK and Spetman’s own cozy positions are threatened, they will make no waves and take no risks. They’re professional bureaucrats, not innovators, not change agents. I agree with TN’s comments 100%. And I also believe “fans” who say we should financially and emotionally support the tedious Bowden Job Program and Old Folks Home no matter what, are enablers of continued subpar performance. In plain English, you’ve been part of the problem.
Okay Well,
So, I should stop buying season tickets, donating money to the boosters that also helps the players and stop buying FSU football merchandise? Is that correct? Because that does a lot more than affect Bobby Bowden and T.K. Wetherell. The fact is that most people posting on blogs, websites and in the media have absolutely no influence on the actual program, and they need to get over that.
It was a rough day when it dawned on me that FSU didn’t actually care if I showed up to a game, because for every one of me there are 3 people that would sit at Doak if they could afford. And, when they can, they will. So, by all means, stop sending in your cash. Especially those of you that write about the team and indirectly profit from it, because that makes sense too, right? Me, on the other hand, I’ll be rooting on the Noles from my seats, until they become so expensive that I can only make it to a couple of games per year, and then I’ll watch the rest at home. 10-2, 2-10 I’ll still be behind the Noles.
The boosters help the players?!? Man, we are in for it!
Look, contributing money to this trainwreck helps two classes of people:
(1) the administration. It’s a signal they’re doing a good job.
(2) the contributor. It makes them feel like they are supporting their team, satisfies an emotional need, and assures priority seating status, for whatever that’s worth.
…and ultimately hurts FSU by contributing to and continuing the decline.
But to each their own.
Jury still out on Coach Fisher? Really? I guess you missed the ACC Offensive Coach of the Year memo.
“FSU led the ACC in scoring offense with 32.7 points per game, as Fisher — now in his second year in Tallahassee — began to see the fruits of his labor. The Seminoles scored 30 or more points in wins over Colorado, Miami, Virginia Tech, Clemson and Maryland, as Fisher pulled strong performances out of first-year starting quarterback Christian Ponder, senior tailback Antone Smith and an offensive line that consisted entirely of freshmen and sophomores.”
You can make your retraction any time now…
I do agree that the TN “Don’t buy tickets and pray for sanctions!” attitude is worthy of someone who needs serious medication. It’s like praying for a staph infection in JoePa’s new hip. BTW, considering his age and the recovery time it takes for hip surgery, I would be surprised if he was back next year. He may be in a wheelchair if he comes back.
Gonzo,
The jury remains out with me, regardless of an award. No retraction necessary. I’m still not convinced that Fisher will lead FSU where FSU fans demand they go; a perennial national title contender.
Incidentally…
Ponder stares down his #1 all the time, that hasn’t improved yet and that’s Fisher’s deptartment. Smith did well I can’t argue there, but the O-Line credit should be given to Trickett.
As for JoePa, I hope he makes a speedy recovery, but I agree that I’m betting it’s unlikely he’ll be back without major assistance or a minor miracle.
NoleCC,
Well, I suppose you could make the case that being “ACC Offensive Coach of the Year” this year may be comparable to being the prettiest woman on a Russian Shot Put Team…
(Only one running back and one receiver over 1,000 yards in the whole ACC?)
I think that, until Coach Fisher is fully in charge of this team, it’s hard to really judge his performance. I find it hard to believe that Bowden is keeping himself fully removed from coaching in spite of what is being said to the media. I think there are conflicting coaching styles at work here.
Next year will will clarify things a good bit. Having a more mature o-line and QB as well as three years under his system will give us a much better picture of his abilities.
Gonzo,
I completely agree with you, which is why I keep saying the jury is still out. Until Jimbo is officially and fully in control, then we can make a judgment.
