I Told You So: FSU Football Season Ticket Sales Declining Again

Loyal ScalpEm.com readers, you’ll remember I told you so last year right? Now that economy is in the crapper, and times are much tougher, and a schedule that features two exhibition games, FSU Football ticket sales are declining even more so says the Orlando Sentinel. Sales are down from last year 6 percent, which were down from 2006. Toss in the fact that the football team has been lackluster since 2001 and it’s a perfect storm for a half full Doak Campbell Stadium for many of the 2008 home games.

Spetman attributes the decline to the economy and FSU’s location. What else can we expect from a newbie who wasn’t here during the Dynasty and wasn’t here the last 7 years? But an AD is supposed to identify and fix revenue problems. Let’s hope he clues in quickly to the situation he inherited and doesn’t act like a bureaucrat, trying to keep his head low and maintaining the status quo. IF Bobby needs to be encouraged to retire so Jimbo can finish revamping the staff and chart his own course, then it better happen soon, or this is going to get worse. This will be the last year Septman can use the “economy excuse”, especially when the other Florida schools are increasing their season ticket sales!
Yeah, I found it ironic that UCF and USF are growing as well as they are, considering USF has to play at RJ, and the UCF is playing at that smallish one on campus now.
When comparing this to UF sales, I ‘d say the major difference is decidedly the location of Tally…
Most folks wanting to attend a game in Tally, will need to stay at least one night and most hotels require a two night stay on football weekends (Fri & Sat)…
So most certainly when stacking inflating gas prices onto a weekend swelling hotel tab that’s assuredly stacked on top of rising tailgaiting and general eats…
It’s not so worth shelling out the coin for the product that has been on display at Doak…
If there was alot of excitement, high pre-season rankings and the premier players that have marqueed past Nole seasons, I feel there would be near sellout numbers regardless of the economy…
Alot of season ticket holders I know are simply buying their packages for a UF ticket and a shot at an away ticket for the Canes…
Which, with lagging ticket sales, shouldn’t be too hard too come by…
I’ve got to agree with gatorhippy. You can’t divorce the remote location from this. If FSU were in Orlando, Tampa, or even Gainesville I would be at pretty much every home game regardless of how horrible the team is. Unfortunately, Tally is just too damned far for me to shell out money for gas, hotel, dining out, and all of the other incidentals (Not to mention I would also have to take Friday off of work).
I agree that location is 70% of the equation especially in these trying economic times. It is hard to get motivated to drive 3 hours each way to a game only to have a required two night minimum. I could go buy a 50″ HDTV and throw one hell of a fiesta for the cash spent going to W. Carolina or UT – Chat. Though I will say, a weekend away in God’s country and tipping a few back at the Palace is enticing!!!!
-Cheers
I haven’t been to the Palace in ages. I’m glad to hear it’s still around. I spent most of my folks cash at Poor Paul’s and The Cow Haus (Now the Beta Bar). Good times!
GH, you hit a lot of that on the head… as did Saturday and Nolelando… Tallahassee (while I love living here) isn’t in the best location for traveling Noles to get to.
I don’t really want to see Western Carolina or UT-Chat… sure I’ll go, but I don’t blame people that don’t want to travel for that, especially in this economy and with prices the way they are.
it’s more than the economy… we can’t even fill the student section and they live here. tickets could be donated to local youth organizations to fill the stadium… there are ways to put people in the seats… they are just too ignorant to figure that out.
Anon… the Boosters do send out emails trying to get boosters to turn in their unused tickets for donation to charities… but I agree it hasn’t been overly successful.
I don’t put much faith in Seminole Boosters, Inc. after the dealings I’ve had with them over the years and the consistent misplacement of my donations to various clubs. Granted it wasn’t a ton of money, but the little bit that goes there, I want to go to the right spot. :)
