From the Palm Beach Post:

Parker is charged with possession of marijuana and carrying a concealed .45 caliber handgun in West Palm Beach.

… Just what the football team needed.

You gotta be kidding me. All that talent what a waste. Shouldnt he be in school instead of South Florida. Just one more reason for the offence to sputter.

Extremely disappointing. Just when you feel like things are starting to turn in a positive direction…just sucks.

I’m gonna take the hardline approach here. This is supposed to be a new era – the pre-Jimbo years. If this is true, I wouldn’t have Parker run stairs – I’d cut him. You screw up, you are gone. Zero tolerance. The time for change at FSU started yesterday.

  5. David says:

Jordi makes a good point. This may be the time to clear out some of the character issues and start winning with guys who are class acts like Warrick Dunn and Derrick Brooks. I’m not condemning the whole roster because I know there are some good guys on the team, but the others need to go play at Da U

Sigh. Will this sort of thing ever end for FSU football?

The one headline that got me today was the one from WCVT Parker Arrest is Another Black Eye for FSU. Exactly how? Lik FSU told him to put a gun in the car???? WCTV reporters would be persona non grata at FSU for a while if I had a say in it.

Great comments everyone… Anon… I think it’s a black eye for FSU in the sense that there is a growing perception of a lack of control around the school and athletic department. Hopefully Spetman can clean this up big time.

Quite frankly, I think this is opportunity #1, and it needs to be harsh to send a message. I agree with Jordi, running stairs doesn’t cut it and I mean that even if the gun charges are pled down to misdemeanor. Why do many players feel that they are entitled to play college football? It’s not a rite, it’s a privilege.

Fisher needs to be the one to react to this, since he’s the HCIW. The message needs to be strong, and Amato needs to keep working hard to clean up the discipline in the program.

I agree that Jimbo needs to come down hard on Preston. I am hoping Jimbo/Bobby give him atleast a years suspension. I don’t want people saying “yea, you guys are winning this year, but it is with felons.” I usually don’t care what people think of FSU, but I myself do not want to root for an idiot who made a retarded decision as drastic as this. If he wants to turn things around, then he will have to work for it. It’s just surprising that this guy did this. Someone might have a bad perception of him from his appearance, but he is usually the guy who has great sportsmanship from what I have seen and heard. I thought that his ethics and decision making would mirror the image that he portrays on the field. I guess not. He has let his teammates down greatly. Come one bro, just register the dang gun, it’s not hard. As far as the pot is concerned: Preston is an incredible athlete, just think how much better he might be if he wasn’t poisoning his system. If I was lucky enough to be in a position where I was the star athlete at an elite program like FSU, then I would be on a strict diet, abide by all laws, work my butt off, and defiantly not do any drugs or alcohol that might affect my performance. By not doing any of these things, then you are letting the fans down by not maximizing your potential. You don’t deserve to play in front of them at the Doak. You are a disgrace and you are NOT a Seminole. Jimbo also needs to send a message to the rest of the team. Hopefully he disiplines the entire team for the actions of this player. He needs to instill in his players brains that this is not acceptable.

Interesting thoughts from a Buckeye… I can’t say I disagree Drew, provided Parker is guilty. It looks that way… but innocent until the court says otherwise. The pot thing is stupid… but there are tons of people that do it. It’s the concealed weapon thing that blows my mind. Why put yourself in a situation like that?

The way I see it… a one year suspension (pending any court stuff) is pointless.. he either goes or stays, that should be the line FSU takes.

  10. DrewNo Gravatar says:

Yeah, good point….oh, and I may goto OSU….but I am NOT a buckeye…I bleed garnet and gold!

  11. jrado says:

    True that Drew.
I agree that FSU should take strict action, pending further investigation. I would hate to see such an amazing athlete be out next season or for good, but they need to send a message to the rest of the team. I agree with the previous comment that it is a privilege to play on a prestiges team such as FSU, and not a right, and the other players need to realize this so we don’t suffer another blow like this.

  12. Luvunoles says:

Perhaps it is time to reign in the boys. There is an argument for football dorm-like housing and year round school for many of the players. Evidently, babysitting for these boy players may be necessary, because of many of them are struggling academicly as well as socially in a collegiate atmosphere. The Athletic Director, the Athletic Department, the Coaches, the Boosters, the PTL, players’ parents and the players should be more than concerned. Everyone should begin to be part of a solution instead of contributing to the problem by sitting on the bench or on the sidelines. Waiting for someone else to solve the problem hasn’t worked. FSU’s reputation of Criminoles may not be amusing to us, but humorists are given examples of our failures every single year. We are recruiting many honorable academically and athletically talented players, but the source of much publicity is the opposite minority of immature, academic underachievers who continue to inplode after the spotlight of success. Success at FSU should be more than, and can be more than what the critics feature in the headlines and articles across Florida and the nation. We want students to come to FSU to be successful in Education, Business, Science etc. as well as Professional Sports. We are proud of our school and our teams but we need to be able to make headlines without police blotter head shots. Just by having the items in his car as reported by the police, Parker should be suspended from the team and from the school pending his court case. Please note that he broke probation for another offense when he drove into this situation. How many offenses? How many chances?
We are all part of the problem if we are not part of the solution.

great points, its gonna hurt to lose such a spark plug on offence, but it might be the message that needs to be sent to preston and the rest of the team. We are not da u and I dont want that reputation. I wish Preston the best of luck and hope it wakes him up,and matures him, so maybe when and if he comes back, it is with a new attitude and outlook on life

Good post Luvunoles… and everyone for that matter.

While I certainly feel that’s a fairly good idea there Luvunoles…

Where does the extra benefits to college athletes stop then compared to what is provided for the average student?

Scholarship athletes already enjoy different and often lower standards of admission compared to the average student on campus…

Private workout facilities with custom programs built for their particularities…

Dining Halls with menus catered to their tastes and eating programs set up by team nutritionists…

Provided housing seperating them from the common student body…

No wait or appointments needed for tutoring at a seperate learning center than the general student body…

And now you want the university to provide a personal babysitting service to keep them out of trouble in the offseason…

At what point do you expect these kids to grow up and take responsibility for themselves?

    When they leave the school?

These student athletes are ADULTS and need to begin acting accordingly at ALL institutions across the country…

Perhaps even more sad is that a regular student that was arrested for the same charges as Parker has been (especially the drug related offense) would lose whatever scholarship funding from the school, state and or federal sources that were being provided to them the first time out of the gate…

And yet guys like Parker (or UF’s Brandon James just so I don’t sound biased) who are arrested for drugs won’t lose squat (barring a felony) except some playing time and maybe national exposure to plead their worthiness for the next level…

To me the special treatment afforded to college athletes versus the average student is what the real crime is here…

  16. NoleCCNo Gravatar says:

Good point GHip… I’ve often struggled with the “they’re kids / they’re adults” camp. I’m not against a football-only dorm, because honestly we all know it’s about money. Big time college football players are about future money, and the schools are about now money. I understand it’s not fair to the average student, but then again it’s not fair that some people have much bigger brains than the football players, or that some people have money from their family.

I don’t know what the solution is, considering society seems to think that adolescence lasts until a person is 30.
