5 College Football Traditions That I Can’t Stand

A thread over at The Rant made me think of some of the traditions that I personally think are kind of weird or, for lack of a better word, dumb. Without further ado (and with Video Evidence):
#5 Florida – Gator “Chomp” - I could easily go after Mr. Two Bits here, but frankly as corny as that tradition seems, the Gators get into it and love it. I can respect that. What I can’t stand is the fact that as the Gator fans “chomp” the band plays Jaws music. Jaws was a shark, not a Gator. Find some better music and I’ll take you off the list.
#4 – Wisconsin – Jump Around YouTube video evidence that Wisconsin is too close to Canada and it’s “take 10 years for the American fad to arrive” tradition.
#3 – Any School Running Through Fire Extinguishers - Welcome to High Schools folks. For this example, we’ll use the Miami Hurricanes.
#2 – Virginia Tech – Hokey Pokey - No seriously, they play the hokey pokey, just watch.
#1 Ohio State – “Dotting of the I” - This is my personal least favorite college football tradition. First of all, they are the Ohio State Buckeyes. Not the Ohio Buckeyes, and although I understand that they are in the state of Ohio, there is an Ohio University. It’s like FSU spelling out Florida without the State. What’s the point? And they get really psyched about it.

I like script Ohio but I’m definitely with you on the Miami one. There is nothing special about it. The funny thing is that ESPN puts that ‘running through the fog’ is one of their top traditions with no mention of Chief Osceola or Renegade.
Well, that’s ESPN for you. I don’t remember the last time I could actually sit through a SportsCenter, or, sadly, a College Gameday.
2 things: 1) House of Pain is cool (look out for their new project La Coka Nostra) 2) Ohio State sucks in all facets of life by virtue of being Ohio State. BOOOOOOOOOOOOO Ohio State. Hooray NOT Ohio State.
I expected nothing less from an EMU guy. lol.
As for OSU, the point they are making is that they are THE Ohio State University…that they ARE Ohio. A few years back, FSU did something similar. We had bumper stickers and such floating around that said something like “FSU is THE university of Florida.”
I hear that the day Lloyd Carr can beat OSU on a regular basis, he will be allowed to dot the I.
As for traditions to hate (or that I cannot stand), the “Garnet” “Gold” cheer at football games is useless. It is a ripoff of the “Urngt” “Blah” cheer from that school to the southeast. It takes too long for us to get it going and dies before it gets started.
Another useless tradition is “meeting” the cheerleaders before the Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarchiiiiiiiiiiiiiing Chieeeeeeeeefs leave the field prior to gametime. Who cares? Do you remember any names? Segway into the Chiefs leaving the field…the tubas circling the Seminole head is great. Do that for an extra five minutes and leave out the cheerleader intros.
Anyway, idle ramblings and YOUR tax dollars hard at work!
They can make the point about Ohio all they want, I still think it’s goofy. And I’m happy I never saw that FSU bumper sticker, I’d have whined about that too. :)
I’m with you on the Garnet / Gold cheer, and frankly the FSU bean bag cheerleader bit. It’s too SEC-like.
Lloyd Carr would tell OSU where they could stick their dotted eye. They’re idiots. The school has a reputation of letting anyone in. It’s like a community college pretending to be a university.
Ouch, Randy…still sore about not being admitted to THE Ohio State University? I do not think LLoyd is saying much to anyone (lost 6 of the last 9 and three in a row)…except to tell reporters how dumb their questions are. BBBBJDB
To paraphrase Tom Cruise in Risky Business, “well boys, looks like Eastern.”
You don’t like the dotting of the “i”? That’s my second fav after Chief Osceola. I’ve seen it live quite a few times and it never gets old.
Yeah, I don’t really have a good reason for it BFT. I could see where some people would like it, but it just bugs me. It takes forever to march into, and the dotting of the “i” is anti-climactic for me.
I’m biased, but the dotting of the I is one of the greatest traditions in college football.
The Gator/Jaws Chomp is the worst…
