Xavier Lee Is The Most Overhyped FSU Recruit. Ever.
Posted by NoleCC
Scott Carter, over at the Tampa Tribune wondered aloud about what Xavier Lee would have to do to avoid being the most overhyped FSU recruit, ever.
The problem for Xavier Lee, is that he can’t.
Seriously, just check the message boards. Yes, FSU fans have a knack for always wanting the second string QB in the game (just ask Thad Busby), and they love to think that someone is the second coming of Charlie Ward. So when it comes to Xavier Lee, he has both of those going for him at the moment. On top of that, he has fans in his camp from the “anybody is better than Chris Rix, it really isn’t Jeff Bowden” school and he was a highly touted 5-star recruit. That equals a lot of hype. Now Seminole fans can set the scene with Jimbo Fischer, who loves a mobile cannon-armed quarterback. That certainly describes Xavier more than Drew Weatherford, although Weatherford is no slouch.
Then there are the things Xavier does to keep the hype going. He’s changed his number from 9 to 1, after Brandon Warren’s departure from the team. (Someone should point out that he might want to not throw 3 INTs against Duke if he’s going to wear #1). He stands on the sidelines with the look of “if I was in there, things would be different.” He meets with Bobby Bowden to talk about his role on the team, and fans cry out begging for Xavier to get his chance. “Just give him a fair shake!” they’ve said.
In reality, he’s had his chance. In fact, he’s had many chances, in games, at practice and off the field.
2005 Stats
27-57 1 INT, 3 TD 466 Yards in 7 games.
2006 Stats
62-121 5 INT, 7 TD 885 yards in 8 games.
Lee is overhyped. Period. He’d have to win two MNCs at this point to live up to all of the hype I’ve listen to over the last few years. Will he? No. He hasn’t distanced himself from the field, and there are talented young QBs behind him who might snap up the chance to play if Weatherford and Lee continue to struggle again in 2007. And, if Antone Smith breaks out at running back, Lee won’t have the chance to be the “star” even if he wins the starting job. I’m rooting for him, because what is good for him is likely good for the Noles, but I just don’t believe the hype.
What do you think? Do you have other overhyped suggestions? Am I crazy? Leave a comment!

Fisher, Bill. Jimbo Fisher.
grammar police aside – i agree.
xavier has had all kinds of chances, but instead spent more nights at AJ’s and Chubby’s chasing ass – instead of buckling down and applying himself.
rumor has it he has now officially given up going out…. although the DAY that story ran on warchant… he was at a Tpain concert in tallahassee until the wee hours. whatever.
i dont know what the fixation is with the black quarterback. Charlie Ward is my all time favorite player… but i dont get it. i honestly dont get the BLIND OPTIMISM that comes with Xavier Lee.
all i heard last tailgate from new fans i met, was how “bowden needs to just back out of this… and give lee his chance… that kid has so much potential, he can make up for mistakes in playcalling”
theres the 2 misconceptions….
1 – bobby doesnt like lee – and wont let him start. drew is his boy.
sure – why the hell ISNT he? drew has done and said everything right so far in his tenure as QB. he gives 140 percent, pushes his teammates – and is a natural leader. he knows the playbook, he knows the checks – he knows it all. no EXCUSES. no APOLOGIES.
if xavier needed the motivation to SHOW he could be that guy… why didnt he? instead he pissed and moaned in interviews about the JF hire saying he would “finally get his chance” – implying sometimes that hes been held back. nobody has held him back more than himself and the crew that tells him how awesome he is. a victim of his own hype.
2 – Lee is sooooo much more athletic than drew. lets face it, lee is a pass first kind of guy. he might have had some glorious runs against the likes of rice, the citadel and duke…. but – cmon…. thats not exactly the toughest competition. they were in over their heads anyways.
the whole thing is sad. the jersey change brings more of the “here he is, finally putting in the effort”…. but why hasnt he been doing it all along?
he’s warchants favorite poster boy – the constant front page story…. and EVERY SINGLE TIME…. its “now its my time” or “well, im really finally dedicating myself” and ive personally had enough talk.
If he can do it on the field, stand back…. but – until then…. its just – TALK.
another thing with the black quarterback, is this….
jamarcus russell.
vince young.
troy smith.
people forget that guys like craig krenzel, chris leak, ken dorsey, jason white, matt leinart, matt mauck are all national championship winners.
vince young is superhuman. the exception to the rule.
i just…. dont get the Hype.
Troy,
“he’s warchants favorite poster boy – the constant front page story…. and EVERY SINGLE TIME…. its “now its my time†or “well, im really finally dedicating myself†and ive personally had enough talk.”
Quote of the month… I’ve read it so many times I’m numb to it.

No, really this time he’s serious, right? ;-)
i can’t say he’s over or under the one thing he hasn’t had was an opportunity mature into the role…too much to say about what could or what may. as far as i know according to all coaches is DW n XL are dead even and the point going to college os for your game to mature. But under JB’s leadership no qbhas a chance to mature. If he went 2 Texas i garaunteed u he would be the 2nd coming of VY. but for some reason FSU wants him to be dan marino (stand upright in the pocket and make plays) all im saying is as much as you nkkock him he wasnt put in the best situation coaching wise
raider,
While I don’t know that anyone will be the 2nd coming of Vince Young anytime soon, regardless of coaching, I’m knocking his attitude more than his athletic talent. Xavier has the raw talent, he just doesn’t ever seem to really care about doing anything to prove it and, subsequently, win the job.
And don’t forget about Christian Ponder and D’Vontrey Richardson. Both are very talented young QBs too.
Xavier Lee admittedly wants to throw the ball. he isn’t a run first kind of guy. he gets almost – upset… if you suggest he is a runner. this whole “hasn’t had an opportunity to mature…”
its garbage. total garbage. you get playing time by DESERVING playing time. you dont just get HANDED the job, and hope that youre sooooooo talented, you play yourself into “maturity”.
show some maturity, screw your balls on tighter, and EARN THE JOB.
if he was at texas, he’d be a backup, too.
who ever created this blog, obviously is either a X hater, racist, or just doesn’t know what the hell is he talking about. The guy had limited amount of playing time, 1 or 2 bad games in the limited amount of time and you jumped all over him. Meanwhile, Drew has 3 years of playing time and still makes a lot of mistakes and you will make excuses for him.
Mike,
Well I’m neither a racist nor a Xavier Lee hater. If you’d bother to read my opinions, you’d know that I just want the best QB for the job. My feelings about Xavier have nothing to do with race, if I were a racist I’d be rooting against most of the FSU football team, wouldn’t I?
Go back to Gatorville, your thin disguise is pretty pathetic.
