Game 1: FSU 1, Maine 0
Game 2: FSU 5, Maine 2
I had the pleasure of attending game 1 of FSU’s doubleheader vs. Maine. Generally speaking, softball games are low scoring, defensive battles. Game 1 was no different. The Seminoles scored the winning run in their last at bat. Casey Hunter threw a 1 hitter, and continued to look intimidating, despite a less than stellar win-loss record.’,'Seminole softball is one of the better atmospheres in Tallahassee. It is a relaxing way to spend an evening. The Lady ‘Noles know how to play and have fun, which so many of the male athletes have seem to forgotten. Perhaps the difference is that most male sports have an established and famous professional league, while the women can generally hope for a place on a national team.
Why are women’s professional sports so hard to market? (Feel free to answer that in the Message Boards.) If television coverage was as up close as being there in person, perhaps more fans would watch it. It was fun to hear Casey Hunter singing in the bullpen, watching Lesley Palmer crash in from third base and hearing every car full of college guys honk at the Lady ‘Noles on their way by the field. (Next time stop in for an inning guys!)
My only disappointment of the night was not seeing more of BillieAnne Gay, who has a gun of a right arm, and proved it, by nailing a Maine runner attempting to steal third base. Opposing runners beware, you will not be going too far against any of the FSU catchers. Perhaps Coach Graf will get her wish this season, and the Lady ‘Noles will peak on their way to Oklahoma. Stay tuned, and get out to a game!!!
